The first and foremost requirement is the output port on your computer (or laptop) and the input port on your TV must match. While the S-video port is the most common one available as an output port on your PC and as an input port on your TV, it could be any one of these ports as well.

• VGA Port
• DVI Port
• HDMI Port
• Composite Video Port
• Component Video Port

If you have a standard definition TV, you probably have an S-Video port or a composite video port. If your TV has an S-video port (input) then your computer must have an S-video port (output) to connect them with an S-Video to S-Video cable. Further, it is better if the number of pins on the S-video ports of the TV and the computer match.

If your Laptop to TV has an composite video port (input) then your computer must have a composite video port (output) to connect them with a composite video to composite video cable.

You can off-course connect the S-video port of the TV to a composite video port of the computer (or vice-versa) using any good S-video to composite video adapter cable available in the market.

Connecting Laptop to TV With Wires

Televisions do not normally support Ethernet cable connections. Instead, you will typically connect your laptop or desktop PC to a TV using one of the following types of audio-visual (AV) cables:

• S-Video
• HDMI
• DVI or HDMI-to-DVI
• VGA
• Any of the above – to-SCART (in Europe)

A scan converter is a device that translates the computer's video signal into standard TV formats. You may need to set up a scan converter to connect your laptop to TV if, between them, the two do not support any compatible combination of AV cable technologies listed above. Newer televisions, however, generally support multiple types of digital inputs, and finding the right cable should not be too difficult.

If you have an HDTV, then you could probably have an HDMI Port or a DVI port or a VGA port. But make sure that your computer has also the corresponding port and you may then connect with a HDMI to HDMI cable or DVI to DVI cable or VGA to VGA cable, as the case may be.

HDMI gives best output quality on your TV but most computers may not have an HDMI port. But you could still use a DVI to HDMI cable to connect the DVI output port on your computer to the HDMI input port on your HDTV! This is possible because HDMI is compatible with DVI.Thus you could enjoy the best quality pictures on your TV.

How to connect computer or laptop to TV?

The following are the steps to connect computer to TV or any laptop to TV.

• 1. Ensure that the computer and TV are at sufficiently close distances.Off-course the distance depends on your cable length.
• Switch off your computer. Disconnect the monitor alone
• 2. Connect the appropriate video cable to the computer’s output port and the TV’s input port. The cable can indicate which line goes in and which one goes out, so make sure that you plug IN your TV set and plug OUT from your computer.
• 3. Turn on your TV and configure or set it to the input that matches the output on your computer i.e. you may pick up your TV remote and switch “Input” from the default to a different selection which may be “S-Video” or “S-VHS” or “HDMI 1″ or “Video 2″ , depending on how you connected the TV to your computer
• 4. Turn on your computer. Since, you have disconnected the monitor in the second step, Vista will automatically detect the TV screen and project onto it. You should see Windows displayed on your TV. If the screen looks stretched, or part of the screen seems cut off, you need to adjust the screen resolution in Windows.If you can’t see Windows on your TV, you might need to reconnect the computer to your monitor and adjust the screen resolution before you connect to your TV. If higher resolutions cause issues, then reduce the resolution to say, 800×600

In case you want your monitor to be connected as well, then you don’t have to disconnect the monitor. i.e. you may ignore step 2. When you turn on your computer, you will be shown some display options. you may choose to check the box against “desktop extension” option, if you want to extend the display on your computer monitor and the TV screen.

You may uncheck the box, if you want to duplicate what you seen on the monitor on the TV screen, as well.You can change the display setting by right-clicking on the desktop, clicking “Personalize,” and then selecting “Display Settings.”

another important thing that you must note is the audio. Cables for VGA, DVI, and component video don’t support audio signals. Though a few HDMI cables do audio signals, not all cables may support.

So you may have to connect a separate audio cable from your computer sound card directly to the TV. you may alternatively, connect the audio signal to a different device, such as the computer speakers or your home stereo system!

How to share images between a laptop (or desktop) PC and the television

One way to show digital pictures and video to friends and family is for all to huddle around the home computer screen. Alternatively, you can connect the computer to a television and send the images to the TV. Displaying Digital Images on The TV

With a digital camera or video recorder, you can create multimedia image files stored on your PCs.
